Scotti McCarthy took the Sensational Stars, one-day class at Quilt Colorado, held in Estes Park, in June 2008.  She designed and mostly stitched the center star in class.  She returned the next day to show the finished star, complete with a Flying Goose border that she designed and stitched in her hotel room!   Impressive Work!

Which Way is South?

by Mary Brown

I was in two of your classes in North Carolina in 2005 and 2006. This quilt began as a class project in 2006. I entered it in the 2007 Cultural Center in Charleston, West Virginia where it won 2nd place. At this show, they always purchase one quilt, and mine was selected for purchase.

The Fishing Hole

My quilt depicts Puget Sound with the Olympic Mountains. It started from a photo of Double Bluff taken from Sunlight Beach on Whidbey Island.  It's titled "The Fishing Hole" for the spot off of Double Bluff that we used to fish at. I'm going to do another one because I really want to illustrate a scene from a story I wrote about fishing with orcas. This one grew away from my original plan, but I really love the result.

  Dear Gail,

I have finished my piece from your class in Kansas City. I have added a few beads to the piece to outline certain designs. I am very pleased with this piece and hope to get it into Houston this fall------------wish me luck.  I enjoyed your class and look forward to trying another design. Thanks for your guidance and inspiration.

Hi Gail,

I was in you class one
year ago in June.  My quilt is finished and it was hanging in the
Minnesota Quilters Show this past June. No ribbons there, but I was
proud of it anyway. It's now hanging in the Rice County (MN) Fair and
it has won 3 ribbons, one of which is Champion. I haven't seen the
ribbons yet, but I'm excited. It will tour the Dakota County Fair in
early August and then the State Fair in late August. Thanks for pushing
me into drafting and completing my own design (with allot of ideas from
you). This has been fun.

I was in your class in Mesa, AZ.  I just wanted to show you a picture of my finished star and border.  I'm
not sure how I am going to set it (I just have it laying on the rest of
the background fabric), but I was so excited to have it all put
together.  I will send another picture when I get it all completed.
Thanks for coming to Mesa.  I had a great time in your class.

Dear Gail:

I was in your class last year.  I just wanted to let you know what a difference you have
made in my quilting. It led me down a new path that is wonderful. These
pieces have been happily secluded in my quilting room for some time. I
took two of my pieces to the guild show and tell last night. Much to my
surprise, they were welcomed with oohs and aahs and a lot of positive
comments. Perhaps I have a chance of doing this quilt thing after all.
I thought I would send you a picture of each of them just for you to
see. Thank you so much for everything. I believe I was meant to meet
you and learn from you so that I could go forward to new things.

Always ,

Color Dance, by Peggy Garbers

Hi Gail.

I wanted to send this to you.  I am so excited to have learned the techniques and I
actually quilted it myself.  I showed it to Guild two weeks ago and
they were so pleased.  Dorothy, Marilyn, and several others are working
on finishing theirs.  This was so exciting to me - it took 14 straight
days or working at least 10 hrs day.  I wanted to name it something to
do with earth and space.  I found the material in lower left hand
corner which represents earth and started to name it Earth, Wind and
Fire.  Then Earth and Comets and finally came up with the name.  In
input would be appreciated so much.  I think I achieved the motion
through space with the quilting and working of light and dark areas.

Dear Gail,
Attached are some pics of my finished quilt.  Hope you are pleased. Shirley Stutz gave me some
ideas on the quilting.

Hi Gail,
The quilt is now finished and will be hanging in an exhibit at our local library. Loved doing this and plan to do another one once I catch up on some other things. The size is 36 x 27. I had a lot of fun doing it and planned to have a friend machine quilt it. After re-reading the part in your book regarding quilting, I will do it myself and not overwhelm the background with a lot of quilting. Thanks for the encouragement. You are an awesome teacher!
