A fresh start! The Gill Street Community Complex in Orillia has triumphantly reopened its doors, offering a revitalized space for the community. The grand reopening on a snowy Wednesday morning was a resounding success, drawing crowds eager to experience the upgrades. But what makes this renovation so special? Let's dive in!
The air was filled with excitement as people braved the weather to celebrate. Cake and coffee were served in the brand-new multi-purpose room, setting a festive tone. Free public skate sessions added to the joy. "It's awesome. We've been waiting for it," exclaimed Jennifer Bekkers, highlighting the community's anticipation.
June and Peter Rea brought their granddaughter, Myra, to skate. It was her first time on an indoor arena. "It's more slippery," Myra said, comparing it to the natural ice she's used to in Gravenhurst. Peter Rea was impressed by the facility, noting the use of Canadian-made aluminum in the stands.
Marcia Russell, the City of Orillia's director of recreation, youth and culture, officially opened the facility. She highlighted the new, spacious multi-purpose room, which replaced two smaller rooms. "We are thrilled," she said, emphasizing the fantastic improvements to the Brian Orser Arena, including a new ice pad, change rooms, and enhanced accessibility. This is where the community's needs are put first!
Councillor Ralph Cipolla shared that the city chose to reinvest in the 47-year-old facility rather than build anew. He reminisced about the original ribbon-cutting in 1978 when the building was known as Twin Lakes Arena, and the subsequent renaming of the arena in honor of Brian Orser. Cipolla also mentioned that Mayor Don McIsaac's mother was on council with him at that time.
The new multi-purpose activity room is a highlight, boasting 12 large windows, a kitchenette, accessible and gender-inclusive restrooms, and two independent entrances/exits, including a wheelchair-accessible automatic door. The extensive renovation included excavating the ground to raise the ceiling, creating a brighter, more welcoming space.
The arena, still bearing the Brian Orser name, now features a new ice plant, lighting, resurfacer, and scoreboard. All six change rooms have been renovated, and the bleachers offer improved viewing. The arena walls have been repainted white, creating a clean and bright atmosphere.
Accessibility is a key focus, with Plexiglass boards in the team areas and penalty boxes, allowing for better viewing for sledge hockey players. Each change room includes an accessible shower and bathroom, with additional wheelchair-accessible bathrooms in the main hallway. The main entrance doors are also automatic and wheelchair accessible. "That's a really great feature that we included," Russell said.
The arena is set to host Ontario Winter Games events, a testament to its enhanced capabilities. The Brian Orser Arena previously hosted ringette competition during the 2018 Ontario Winter Games, and Russell recalls the excitement of seeing the arena full.
