Archaeologist Rachel Frame has revealed that 34 such shoes were discovered at the Magna Roman Fort, with eight of them being exceptionally long. This discovery is particularly intriguing when compared to the nearby Vindolanda settlement, where out of 5,000 shoes found over 55 years, only a handful were of similar size.

And this is the part most people miss... The team believes that further excavations and discoveries of altars or tombstones could provide crucial clues. These objects often reveal personal details and the units to which the soldiers belonged.
"We're hoping to find evidence on altars during the dig. Tombstones can give quite a lot of personal detail," Frame explains.
Additionally, the team will search for objects related to specific cultural practices, which could offer insights into the soldiers' origins and backgrounds.
However, these potential discoveries are more likely to occur in the final stages of the excavation, which begins in April. Frame notes, "We'll be exploring the different phases within the fort, which is where we expect to find these objects."
The mystery deepens as Frame reveals that the abundance of shoes at both Vindolanda and Magna Roman Fort is due to the unique ground conditions at these sites. The low oxygen levels in the soil have preserved the leather shoes for centuries, offering a rare glimpse into the past.
