Could Alex Bregman’s Return to Boston Be the Missing Piece for the Red Sox?
By Aaliyan Mohammed
The Boston Red Sox have yet to make a headline-grabbing move in free agency, but they’ve quietly bolstered their roster through strategic trades. Names like Sonny Gray, Johan Oviedo, and Willson Contreras have already injected fresh talent into the team. But here’s where it gets interesting: despite these additions, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has made it clear he’s not done yet—he’s on the hunt for another impactful bat to round out the lineup. And this is where Alex Bregman’s name enters the conversation.
While stars like Ketel Marte and Bo Bichette would undoubtedly be game-changers, CBS Sports’ R.J. Anderson predicts the Red Sox will focus on re-signing Bregman. And this is the part most people miss: Bregman’s 2023 resurgence wasn’t just about his stats—it was about his leadership. Despite missing nearly two months with a quad injury, he posted an impressive .821 OPS, his best since his All-Star 2019 season. Before the injury, he was batting .299 and ranked in the top ten in OPS, proving he still has elite-level talent.
But here’s where it gets controversial: Bregman’s market is crowded with suitors, including familiar names like the Cubs and Tigers, as well as surprising contenders like the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks. Yet, inertia—the tendency to stick with what works—makes Boston the frontrunner. Still, the question lingers: Is Bregman’s return a sure thing, or could another team swoop in with a better offer?
Breslow’s public praise for Bregman hasn’t gone unnoticed. “We had the chance to see up close what Alex can bring to a clubhouse and what he can bring to the field,” Breslow said on MLB Network. “His impact on our team was huge, especially as a leader for our younger players.” These words suggest Boston’s interest is more than just talk, but they also leave room for uncertainty. “We obviously remain engaged in conversations, but how things will go, we’re not sure,” Breslow added.
Here’s the bigger question: If the Red Sox do land Bregman, what kind of domino effect could it trigger across the league? His signing wouldn’t just be about adding a bat—it would be about bringing back a proven leader who elevates everyone around him. But with so many teams in the mix, is Boston’s favorite status truly secure?
What do you think? Is Alex Bregman the missing piece the Red Sox need, or should they aim for a different target? Let us know in the comments—this debate is far from over.
