"They say 'Get out,' but how can we when the airspaces are closed?" asks Odies Turner, a stranded chef from Dallas. This sentiment is shared by many, as the situation becomes increasingly dire.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Mora Namdar took to X, urging Americans in Iran, Israel, and other countries in the region to "DEPART NOW" using any available commercial transportation. But with limited options, the scramble to get home is a daunting task.
"Right now, the options are fairly limited," says Mike Huckabee, the U.S. ambassador to Israel. Governments around the world are working tirelessly to evacuate their citizens, but the situation remains complex and uncertain.
Many travelers find themselves holed up in hotels near major Mideast gateways, while others are forced to seek shelter due to airstrikes or are stranded on cruise ships unable to navigate the Strait of Hormuz.
The war's location has a profound impact on travel and trade, as highlighted by international aviation consultant Anita Mendiratta, who is herself stranded in Bangkok.
"Within the Middle East, an eight-hour flying distance covers two-thirds of the world's population," she explains. "When that corridor is blocked, it creates a ripple effect, forcing aviation to navigate alternative routes, which adds significant pressure on airlines."
Despite the challenges, some travelers are slowly making their way out. Tess Arnold, a travel writer from Seattle, managed to reach London after being stranded in Dubai. After days of uncertainty and the sound of potential missile interceptions, her relief is palpable.
"Huge relief," she shares via text message. "The entire plane was whooping and clapping."
