The Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, or COSC, has been the guardian of this certification for Swiss-made mechanical watches since 1973. But now, they're taking things up a notch.
COSC is introducing a new, more demanding standard, ensuring that your next Swiss watch purchase could be the most precise one yet. However, this doesn't mean the classic 'Certified Chronometer' standard is going away. COSC will continue to certify watches to the traditional ISO 3159 standard, but they're also offering something more for brands striving for ultimate precision.
Introducing the 'Excellence Chronometer' standard, a title that truly lives up to its name. Here's how it works:
The initial 15 days of testing for the Excellence Chronometer certification mirror the Certified Chronometer process, examining the movement outside the case. Then, the manufacturers case the movements, and the real fun begins with an additional 5-day test.
During these 5 days, a robot designed for the task will simulate wearing the watch for 24 hours, mimicking everyday use. But that's not all. The watch must also meet tighter accuracy standards of -2 to +4 seconds per day, resist magnetic fields up to 200 Gauss, and maintain the power reserve promised by its maker.
But here's where it gets interesting: a chronometric arms race.
COSC's move is a response to a decade-long competition among watchmakers to push the boundaries of accuracy. Rolex, for instance, has its in-house Superlative Chronometer testing, guaranteeing -2 to +2 seconds per day accuracy since 2015, along with enhanced water resistance and power reserve.
Omega, not to be outdone, partnered with METAS in 2015 to create the Master Chronometer certification. This certification goes beyond COSC, testing the fully cased watch and ensuring accuracy within 0 to +5 seconds per day, with improved water resistance and power reserve. The standout feature? Master Chronometers can resist a staggering 15,000 Gauss magnetic field, a level found in some MRI machines, making them virtually immune to magnetism.
In 2021, Tudor, Rolex's sister brand, joined the METAS bandwagon. Omega countered in 2024 by establishing the Laboratoire de Précision, an independent chronometer-testing body. This new institution, open to all brands, follows the ISO 3159 standard but tests continuously over 15 days, unlike COSC's 24-hour intervals.
Omega's cutting-edge technology, developed for Olympic timing, plays a significant role here. The Laboratoire de Précision uses instruments that capture movement data with ten times more precision than current methods, enabling this continuous testing.
