Unveiling Italy's Sacred Trails: A Nuns' Journey
In a bold move to combat overtourism, Italy has resurrected ancient trails, offering a unique pilgrimage experience through the heart of Benedictine monasticism's origins. Imagine wandering through forgotten landscapes, where the echoes of medieval Europe's spiritual foundations still resonate.
My journey began with a visit to Sister Katherine Adams, a Franciscan nun, in the village of Vallepietra. She invited me to embark on the Cammino della Santissima Trinità, an ecclesiastical adventure through the forests of Lazio and Abruzzo.
This network of four trails, spanning 18km, leads to pivotal Catholic sites, largely untouched by tourism. With a thermos of coffee, a rosary, and a map, I joined the growing community of devotees exploring Italy's newest spiritual path.
A Trail of Sisterly Love and Adventure
While these trails have existed for centuries, the santo cammino came to life in 2022, offering a unique escape from the crowds. Adams and her fellow nuns mapped these routes, providing young explorers with an adventurous way to discover Italy's lesser-known spiritual gems.
"Subiaco and Vallepietra offer more than just ruins and grand piazzas," Adams shared. "Here, sacred relics and challenging hikes converge, creating a unique sanctuary experience."
Today, Subiaco is known for its river rafting and medieval ruins, but its role as the birthplace of Western monasticism often goes unnoticed.
In this ancient countryside, Saint Benedict of Nursia founded his first monastic communities, shaping a world of prayer, labor, and discipline. Benedictine monasteries became cultural hubs, preserving ancient knowledge, nurturing the arts, and pioneering techniques that defined medieval Europe.
Along the trail, I discovered the majestic Santa Scolastica monastery, a tribute to Saint Benedict's sister, the founder of Benedictine life for women. Immersion in its ancient library led me to the end of the Cammino delle Abbazie, transitioning into the Tourist Trail ST2 towards the Sacro Speco monastery.
The Sacred Journey to Sacro Speco
Cars may have arrived in these hills, but the trail remains the most evocative route to the monastic community, one of Italy's holiest sites for Benedictine spirituality. Built into a limestone cliff, the monastery's name, "Sacro Speco," translates to "holy cave," where Saint Benedict is believed to have lived in penitence.
Following the trail, I felt connected to the shepherds, hermits, and nuns who once walked these paths, carrying candles and provisions. The trail climbs above Lake San Benedetto, offering views of ravines below.
"Spirituality is woven into every thread of this place," Friar Maurizio Osb explained. "From the old mule tracks to the apothecary room, this community embodies the Benedictine principle of ora et labora."
At Sacro Speco, monks continue their centuries-old tradition of gardening, conserving plants to create herbal products sold at the monastic apothecary.
In the Footsteps of Ancient Pilgrims
After immersing myself in Subiaco's spiritual world, I traveled to Vallepietra, an 11th-century village with a rich history. Here, I enjoyed a plate of fettuccine and local cheeses before continuing on the Sentiero dei Pellegrini, now part of the newly mapped pilgrimage.
At the heart of the Santissima Trinità Sanctuary, I stood before the open-air altar, a focal point since the 5th century. Guided by Adams and Sister Mary Ricci, I explored the neoclassical Chapel of San Giuseppe, home to ecclesiastical masterpieces. The central fresco of the Holy Trinity, dating back to the 12th century, captivated me with its Byzantine-influenced iconography.
"Symbolism is integral to this hiking journey," Ricci explained. "Each step reveals simple crosses with messages from pilgrims and candles lit in hope for miracles."
This pilgrimage offers a unique blend of adventure, spirituality, and historical discovery, providing an alternative perspective on Italy's rich cultural heritage.
